Our hospital visits

Hello everyone! Sorry it’s been awhile since we’ve posted. As you know, it has been quite a crazy month and a half for us! I thought I would share a little about it, and about our hospital experiences.

As a recap, my dear husband broke his ankle on Thanksgiving Day playing football with some friends. A few days later he had surgery, and we spent three days in the hospital. The hospital here that we go to is a “Western hospital”, in that they use Western medicine and the doctors and nurses are able to speak English. Also, the food is Western (and yummy...as the wife of the patient got to experience). Everyone is really nice and the treatment is great. Dave’s surgery on his ankle went great, but the recovery process was a little tough. He was in a lot of pain, and the pain meds made him nauseous. Thankfully, the pain and the nausea only lasted altogether a week or so. He uses crutches to walk and cannot put weight on his right foot until the end of January. It’s rapidly approaching, and we are excited! We arranged for every morning a man in a three-wheel motorized rickshaw to come and pick him up so he can go to class, which has been really good. A great way to get out of the apartment and keep up with class :)

Exactly one month to the day after his ankle surgery, Dave noticed a pain in his lower abdomen. As the pain got progressively worse over the next six hours, we figured it was his appendix and headed to our home away from home. We arrived a little after midnight, and five hours later, Dave was having surgery again! Around 6 am, a nurse came into our hospital room and woke me up. She said the surgery went well and that the doctor needed to tell me a couple of days. So sleepy-eyed, I headed to the surgery ward of the hospital. After waiting for a little while, our doctor (who reminds me remarkably of Tim Curry, especially his accent), came out in his scrubs and head cap-- holding Dave’s appendix! (it was, of course, being held by tweezers over a container). I couldn’t believe it! He showed me how the the appendix was inflamed, and let me know he’d be by the next day to check on Dave. Back to bed I went and Dave soon followed. This post-surgery was a lot better pain-wise. We were thankful that he didn’t even need the pain meds!

We spent another couple of days in the hospital after that surgery, and the nurses in particular couldn’t believe that we were back. We’ve really been able to become friends with some of them, they are all so sweet. One of the kitchen staff even (for some unknown reason/His favor) took a liking to us and started bringing us extra food and Diet Cokes :) Overall, like I said, we got really good care and we are just so thankful for that!

Thanks for sticking with us and thinking of us and all of your encouragement and love. The picture is a picture of “Flat Patrick” visiting the hospital- a friend from the States who has come to visit.
