We are in East Asia! Getting off the plane we were met by a friend who lives here named Kata, and it’s a good thing, because fourteen hours on a plane can you make you go a little bit crazy. We stayed up until bedtime (fighting against the lure of sleep and exhaustion) because that helps a lot with jet lag. We crashed around 8:30 after a great dinner of dumplings (we love dumplings), and then we woke up the next morning...at 4:30 am! Though for some people, like our dads Mike (Dave’s dad) and Frank (Morgan’s dad) this is not early, for us, it was very early...we woke up at 4:30 and felt completely rested and AWESOME! Henceforth we called it “jet-awesomeness” rather than jet-lag, and we tried to milk it for all it was worth. That first morning, I had the pleasure of heading to the campus where we are going to be studying to walk. My heart was filled with joy and love for the people of East Asia. And though there are many reasons I love them, one reason is that they are an early morning culture. Here is a list of just some of the things I saw people doing that morning:
- Elderly men fishing in the stream that runs through campus
- Moms and dads holding their babies to watch the men fishing
- Exercising- on campus there is a track and there were tons of people, men and women, old and young, utilizing it.
- Cooking breakfast food on the side of the road- it’s very popular to buy breakfast to go from a street vendor
- Singing...just walking and singing. It’s pretty normal to just walk and sing here.
We will keep you posted as we continue to observe the culture on great things that they do here in East Asia.
