Misadventures in East Asia...

We went to a northern coastal city last week to vacation for a few days. It was a great time with friends, and a great time to see another part of the country (and even try some seafood that isn't usually a part of our palate).

Yesterday morning when we were checking out of our hotel, though, they tagged some extra money onto our bill. So naturally, we asked, "What is this?"

The front desk employees quietly replied, "A product."

Having been the target of many a rip-off scheme, that seemed a little fishy. So I asked, "Product? What product?"

They said, "One of our hotel's products."

We replied, "Besides the water bottles in the room (can you guess which one of us was drinking those?), we haven't used any products at all."

They quickly wrote something down and turned the paper around so we could see it. All I saw were a few sloppy, undecipherable characters.

"I can't read this, but what are you talking about?"

Then they finally said, "Safety-cover" (you probably won't need to think too long to figure out what that means in East Asian). We instantly realized why everyone seemed so uncomfortable.

Did I mention that there were tons of people crowded around the front desk at this time?

We assured them that we hadn't used this "product", but to make sure they had to buzz on the walkie-talkie to an employee, "Hey! Can you check room 202 again? Are all the safety-covers there?" They finally heard the report back that all was there, and the fee was waived.

A lot of trouble to save roughly $1, but you know what they say, a penny saved is a penny earned!
